Cape Town Biogas

Cape Town Biogas partnered with Broadreach Energy to introduce industrial heat pumps and solar power, creating a cleaner and more efficient biogas facility that reduces operating costs, carbon emissions and reliance on the grid.

In partnership with Broadreach Energy, CT Biogas is demonstrating how innovative energy technologies can work together to create a cleaner, more efficient industrial operation.

Cape Town Biogas transforms organic waste into renewable biogas, helping businesses divert waste from landfill while producing a reliable, renewable energy source, reduce disposal costs, lower emissions, and strengthen their environmental credentials.

The challenge

Operating an anaerobic digestion facility requires significant amounts of heat to maintain optimal digester temperatures. Historically, this heating relied on carbon-intensive light fuel oil burners, increasing operating costs and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

Broadreach Energy partnered with CT Biogas to finance the installation of eight high-efficiency industrial heat pumps through a flexible rent-to-own model, making the transition to cleaner technology both practical and financially accessible.

CT Biogas has become the first biogas facility in South Africa to use industrial heat pumps for anaerobic digester heating with three times greater efficiency than conventional electric heating and significantly reduced carbon emissions.

To maximise savings, the system also takes advantage of the City of Cape Town’s off-peak electricity tariffs. Hot water storage tanks are heated overnight when electricity costs are lower, ensuring a consistent heat supply throughout the day while reducing energy expenditure.

CT Biogas has also invested in a large-scale solar installation to further reduce grid dependence and improve operational resilience.

By combining solar generation with efficient heating technology, CT Biogas is building a more resilient, lower-carbon energy ecosystem that supports both operational performance and environmental responsibility.
